This course explores the American dreams and socioeconomic realities that shape the American literary tradition. Considering social class as it intersects with other identity categories (like race and gender), we will look at the lives of haves and have-nots as they appear in a range of texts, from the 19th century mythology of Ragged Dick to the realists, reformers, and nomads of the 20th and 21st centuries.
