Students will develop a technical understanding of songwriting and musical composition through analysis of pre-existing musical materials, styles, and genres. Students will apply knowledge gained from analysis toward composing their own original music. Techniques such as orchestration, voice leading, functional harmony, timbral analysis, and rhythmic notation will be considered.
