Students in the English major develop a solid foundation with 18 credits of core classes: an introductory literature class (which also satisfies the general education requirement in Literature), surveys of the British and American literary traditions, and a creative writing course covering a range of genres. These core courses are offered in sequence, one each semester.
Students then work with a faculty advisor to choose 28 credits of advanced coursework, either creative writing or literature or a combination of both.
All courses used to complete a major must have grades of "C" or better. The Division of English does not accept courses taken online for transfer credit after matriculation.
Requirements
Complete the following.
Note: ENGL 450 Independent Study does not count toward the major. ENGL 496 English Honors Thesis may be counted toward the major. Also, the Division of English strongly recommends that English majors complete the intermediate level of a foreign language. Students may count one literature course (300-level or above) taken in a foreign language towards the English major.
